American Law Practice

LLM

About this Program

The LLM in American Law Practice at the Sturm College of Law helps foreign-trained attorneys gain a strong understanding of the skills necessary to practice law in the U.S., or to engage with U.S.-trained lawyers. The program features the law school's Carnegie Integrated Courses, which support simulated or practice-oriented learning.

Students in the program can choose a concentration from a variety of tracks, including Corporate and Commercial Law, Environmental and Natural Resources Law, International Law or Litigation. They can also design a program of study to fit their interests and career needs. The program fully integrates students into Denver Law's JD courses, offering complete immersion into a U.S. law school environment.

Corporate and Commercial Law for Practicing Attorneys

About this Program

The Corporate and Commercial Law Program at Sturm College of Law prepares students with the knowledge and skills to practice corporate law, commercial law and bankruptcy and business litigation effectively. Those who earn the certificate receive the practice-ready insight to get a running start in their legal careers.

Denver Law's Corporate and Commercial Law Certificate combines both traditional coursework and experiential learning opportunities, providing students with important skills sought by business clients. Students can choose from one of three paths to focus on: corporate law, commercial transactions or business litigation. We offer hands-on experience through the Legal Externship Program, with placements in firms and counsel's offices, and the Community Economic Development Clinic, an innovative clinic where students learn by putting the fundamentals of transactional business law into practice.

Environmental and Natural Resource Law and Policy

About this Program

The expanding array of interrelated environmental, natural resource and energy issues offers degree holders a wide range of career opportunities. The Master of Legal Studies (MLS) in Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Policy (ENRLP) allows students to broaden their understanding of the policies and laws affecting their area of expertise. This comprehensive program provides well-rounded preparation for environmental and natural resources professionals to possess thorough knowledge of the legal issues on a national and global scale.

The Master of Legal Studies program at Sturm College of Law is open to those who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree, irrespective of subject matter area. Students have the chance to take innovative coursework, including the ENRLP core curriculum, as well as innovative courses in renewable energy and sustainable development. Students can also gain hands-on experience through participation in the University of Denver Water Law Review.

The LLM in Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Policy (ENRLP) allows law students to develop an understanding of the challenges and opportunities in this complex legal field.

The Sturm College of Law's LLM in Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Policy is open to students who hold a JD degree or foreign equivalent. The degree provides students the opportunity to hone their legal knowledge through the core ENRLP courses, including natural resources law, environmental law, energy law and many more. They can also participate in the Environmental Law Clinic, the University of Denver Water Law Review, and internships for a well-rounded education and real-world legal experience.

International Business Transactions

Students in the International Business Transactions (IBT) LLM program at the Sturm College of Law graduate with the skills necessary to competitively position themselves in regional, national and global legal marketplaces. The program provides a deep understanding of international business and transactional law through courses in trade, commercial arbitration and dispute resolution, international intellectual property, banking, investment and finance.

A flexible structure allows students to design their own curriculum or pursue a concentration in International Environmental and Natural Resources Law, Trade and Investment Law, or Intellectual Property Law. Experiential learning opportunities are highly encouraged through the Legal Externship Program, International Law Society and International Commercial Arbitration and Investment Arbitration competitions, among others. Practice-ready graduates of Denver Law's LLM in International Business Transactions also graduate with the highly sought-after skills of negotiation and drafting.

The JD program at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law provides an innovative, hands-on and student-centered education to train skilled lawyers who will graduate with marketable legal experience. With both day and evening classes available, students benefit from a flexible schedule designed to promote school-life balance and encourage cross-disciplinary opportunities.

The wide variety of academic specialties in our nationally ranked JD program allows students to tailor their education to a specific practice area that matches their job goals. Specialties are available in Environmental and Natural Resources Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Law, Constitutional Rights and Remedies, Corporate and Commercial Law and Workplace Law. Students can also build practice-ready skills through the law school's clinical programs, as well as the externship program (one of the largest in the country), the Semester in Practice and more.

About this Program

Sturm College of Law's Legal Administration Certificate opens doors to careers in the management and operation of law firms, courts and other legal organizations. This 18 semester-hour program is open to those with a bachelor's degree who are not candidates for the Master of Science in Legal Administration (MSLA) degree through the Graduate Legal Studies program.

The certificate is designed to help students build skills and knowledge in one of three unique concentrations: court administration, law firm administration or international court administration. This program also allows participants the flexibility to design their own curriculum to fit their needs, as well as to take courses in-class, online or a combination of both.

Students in the Master of Science in Legal Administration (MSLA) program will blend business, law and technology, providing students with the career-ready knowledge and skills to run a law firm, court or legal organization, both nationally and internationally.

MSLA courses are available online, with a few elective offerings taught on campus, to accommodate both traditional students and working professionals. The curriculum ranges from human resources, communication, accounting and project management, as well as more specialized topics like court case flow and legal technology. Our program allows students to concentrate in one of three areas: Law Firm Administration, Court Administration or International Court Administration. Through numerous externship opportunities, students put legal theory into practice while mastering the inner workings of legal administration.

Understanding the legal aspects of various highly regulated areas such as financial services, human resources, health care and corporate compliance is increasingly important. Sturm College of Law's Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program is designed for students who wish to deepen their understanding of legal issues without pursuing a three-year law degree. The MLS degree allows them to enrich their education and employment with knowledge of specialized legal subjects, the legal system and legal reasoning.

The program teaches students how to effectively interact with lawyers, think critically about organizations and their governing legal structures and to understand the legal, legislative and regulatory landscapes in which they operate. A formal dual degree with Master of Social Work is also available to interested participants.

Natural Resources Law and Policy

Sturm College of Law's Certificate of Studies in Natural Resources Law and Policy offers specialized skills in natural resources law. The program is open to those who hold a JD or foreign equivalent law degree, as well as those who hold a natural resources-related undergraduate degree. This certificate is ideal for those who are not able to devote a full year to master's degree study.

Certificate candidates must complete 16 semester credits chosen from courses in the curriculum of the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program at Denver Law. These courses can help students increase their knowledge of the issues, policies and laws that affect natural resources and the environment worldwide, giving them a legal advantage in both the domestic and international marketplace.

Solo and Small Practice Management

Certificate

About this Program

The Solo and Small Practice Management Certificate at the Sturm College of Law provides attorneys with the necessary knowledge and business skills to open and operate a legal practice. It is available to those currently holding a JD or a foreign equivalent law degree.

The 16 semester-credit hour program can be completed in one year. Our program guides students through client service and relationship management, trust accounts, accounting processes, law practices administration, business development, billing and fees, marketing, social media practices and much more. The Solo and Small Practice Management Certificate helps attorneys bridge the gap between lawyering and successfully operating their own practice in the legal marketplace.

Sturm College of Law offers one of the nation's oldest, largest and most prestigious Graduate Tax Programs in the nation. The Master of Taxation program provides a distinct education in both the legal process and the accounting aspects of tax practice. The interdisciplinary curriculum, in conjunction with Daniels College of Business, provides well-rounded preparation for tax accountants, who are expected to possess thorough knowledge of tax-related legal issues. Classwork is based directly on tax law, and students have the chance to add practical experience to their resumes through the Low-Income Tax Payer Clinic, as well as the Internship and Externship Program.

The Big Four accounting firms, as well as selected local and regional firms, recruit annually on campus. The majority of students who participate in recruitment are offered a professional position.

Sturm College of Law offers one of the nation's oldest, largest and most prestigious Graduate Tax Programs in the nation. Students have the chance to add practical experience to their resumes through the Low-Income Tax Payer Clinic, as well as the Internship and Externship Program.

An LLM in Taxation is open to students who hold a JD degree, as well as those who are currently working on their JD at the Sturm College of Law. The degree provides students a chance to hone their legal knowledge through classwork based directly on the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations. Our Tax Challenge team also provides LLM students the opportunity to develop an analysis of a complex international or corporate tax problem. We've been remarkably successful in this competition over the last 20 years, placing first nationally six times, second eight times, and third four times.
