Professional Biography
John Hathaway graduated with distinction from the University of Iowa School of Law in 2016 and has spent the past decade representing immigrants in removal proceedings and related matters. He began his career practicing before the Omaha Immigration Court, first with Kasaby & Nicholls in Omaha, Nebraska, and later with Malott Law in Iowa City, Iowa. In these roles, he developed a broad practice encompassing not only immigration defense but also criminal defense, family law, and appeals, frequently handling matters that arose from or overlapped with his clients’ immigration cases.
In 2021, John relocated to Denver, Colorado, where he has practiced before the Denver Immigration Court and other related immigration adjudicators, first with the Meyer Law Office and most recently at Lichter Immigration. Over the course of his career, he has represented clients in high-stakes litigation in various federal circuit court appeals, before the Iowa Supreme Court, and he also co-authored an amicus curiae brief before the Supreme Court of the United States.
John’s work has often centered on the intersection between immigration and criminal law, advocating for noncitizens whose contact with the criminal legal system places them at heightened risk of deportation. This stems from John’s experience at the University of Iowa School of Law and its legal clinic. There, he managed a project providing categorical analysis of the immigration consequences of nearly all of the offenses in the Iowa Criminal Code for the purpose of Padilla advisements. He also represented clients in their criminal and immigration matters and received honors for client service.
