Scholarship Allows LLM Student to Attend Animal Law Conference
Leki Tshering, a current LLM candidate who holds the Sturm College of Law’s Scholarship in Global Natural Resources and Energy Law, was recently awarded a scholarship from Attorneys for Animals, Inc.
The scholarship allowed Tshering to attend the 33rd Annual Animal Law Conference held in Chicago last month. The conference brought together lawyers, scholars, and advocates to discuss a wide range of issues, including legislative strategies for animal protection, the role of media in advocacy, gaps in companion animal laws, free speech and activism, and enforcement challenges in factory farming.
Tshering enjoyed the conference and found the experience has provided immense insight to his current studies and pursuits. He added, “during the conference, I had the opportunity to meet and engage with professors and students from various law schools, as well as attorneys dedicated to advancing animal welfare through their legal practice. Attending the conference has also inspired me to explore the possibility of developing an animal law program in Bhutan upon returning home. As the country continues to advance its legal education and environmental policies, there is a growing need to consider the welfare of animals within our legal and ethical frameworks.”
While working toward his degree, Tshering also serves as a research assistant to Professor Justin Marceau, director of the Animal Law Program. In Bhutan, Tshering works as a lawyer and faculty member at Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law, the country’s first and only law school.
