A Decade of Service

Incoming Sturm College of Law students learn about the mission of Food Bank of the Rockies, one of the organizations supported during the 2025 Day of Service.
As part of the 2025-2026 orientation, the Sturm College of Law's incoming full-time first-year JD students participated in service projects on Wednesday, August 13. Initiated 10 years ago, the Day of Service allows students to work together to provide support for nonprofits, individuals, and communities in Metro Denver.
This year, approximately 230 incoming students, along with a handful of student leaders, supported the following organizations: Arc Thrift Stores, Denver Parks and Recreation, Florence Crittenton Services, Food Bank of the Rockies, Habitat ReStore Aurora and Denver, Metro Caring, Metro Volunteer Lawyers, Project C.U.R.E., The Mission Community Center, VOA Veterans Service Center, and Yard Angels.
Anthony Pereria, manager at Metro Volunteer Lawyers (MVL) with the Denver Bar Association, shared this about the partnership: "MVL’s Family Law Court program assists with straightforward, uncontested family law cases. At client meetings, volunteers meet with applicants to complete the documents needed to file their case with the court. The paperwork can be confusing and overwhelming for pro se individuals, so having someone to guide them through the process is a tremendous help. The students gained valuable experience meeting with applicants and completing court forms, and they enjoyed getting to know the people they were helping. All of the applicants were extremely grateful for the assistance they received."
Professor Alexi Freeman, associate dean of diversity equity and inclusion and director of externships and social justice initiatives, leads the activity annually. According to Freeman, “this is one of my favorite programs. Students get a chance to be away from the computer, connect with each other, contribute to critical needs, and learn the value of community service and pro bono early in their legal journeys.”
