Legal Responses to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine
A Lunchtime Lecture Presented by Visiting Professor David Akerson
The Ved Nanda Center invited students, faculty, and the community for a timely discussion on how the international legal community has responded to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The talk explored the proposed EU ad hoc Court of Aggression, designed to prosecute the crime of aggression; the International Criminal Court’s indictment of Vladimir Putin, albeit for a narrowly framed offense; international initiatives to document Russian war crimes; and efforts to build the capacity of Ukrainian prosecutors to handle complex war crimes cases domestically.
The talk was led by David Akerson, a Visiting Assistant Professor of the Practice at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Professor Akerson has over 25 years of experience in international criminal law, having served as a prosecuting trial attorney at the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda. More recently, he has advised the Ukrainian Office of the Prosecutor General on war crimes evidence management and accountability efforts.
