Advocates Cup General Information

The Advocates Cup is a wonderful opportunity for 1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls to develop and sharpen their trial advocacy skills — including critical thinking skills, application of evidence, and professional speaking and writing skills.

Teams of four (4) students compete, and the distinguishing aspect of The Advocates Cup is two of the team members must be 1Ls. So The Advocacy Cup offers a mentoring component which helps promote the Experiential Advantage Curriculum™ that DU Law fosters in all students.

Themis Bar Review™ is generously sponsoring the Cup, and is donating a FREE Themis Bar Review Course to each of the Outstanding Advocate winners (2). Each course is valued at $1,695.00.

The 2016 Advocacy Cup schedule is as follows:

Round 1 Friday 2.26 6:00 p.m.
Round 2 Saturday 2.27 9:30 a.m.
Round 3 Saturday 2.27 1:30 p.m.
Round 4 Sunday 2.28 9:30 a.m.
Championships Sunday 2.28 1:30 p.m.

There will be a non-mandatory Informational Meeting on Wednesday, 1.20.16 at 12:00 in Room 280. The purpose of the meeting will primarily be to answer questions.

There will be a “Find-a-Partner Party” on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at C&G Tavern. Anyone who is interested in competing is welcome to attend. The purpose of the party is to help advocates find partners. So even if an advocate has no partners, please come.

The Official Rules of The Advocates Cup will appear on this webpage and all competitors are bound, upon application, to the Honor Code of the law school. Overall, each team is given sixty (60) minutes to present their side of the case and rebut the other side’s case (Opening, 2 Directs, 2 Crosses, and a Closing.)

Awards will be given to the Championship Team, as well as to the Outstanding 1L Advocate and the Outstanding Upperclass Advocate (2L/3L). The Outstanding Advocates Awards will be based on ONLY the preliminary rounds. Thus every student, even if their team does not advance to the Championships, will be eligible to win one of the two Outstanding Advocate Awards.

Themis Bar Review™ will award a FREE Themis Bar Review course to the outstanding 1L Advocate and the Outstanding Upperclass Advocate. (Valued at $1,695).

The case materials will be posted on this webpage the week of 2.1.16.
