Message from the Director

Today’s societies face a fundamental dilemma: How to develop and use natural resources in a manner that does not compromise the lives and livelihoods of tomorrow’s generations.  While this may seem self-evident, it represents an often delicate balancing act that deserves on-going and careful attention.  The University of Denver Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Policy Graduate Program is designed to address these key issues, with particular attention to the roles of law and policy in the overall process.  We welcome your interest in our program and look forward to the opportunity to explain how our course of study may benefit you and your career.

Don C. Smith
Director of Graduate Studies
Environmental and National Resources Law Program

"The sustained development of our society is dependent on obtaining fundamental resources such as food, water, timber, minerals and energy. In seeking to provide these resources, care must be taken that their obtainment does not impose upon our world irreversible impacts that will in the long run decrease the ability of future generations to remain fruitful. It has become increasingly apparent that an important role of law is to regulate man’s behavior in such a manner that the needs of today do not preempt the potential of tomorrow. Our programs offer a unique variety of advanced study programs designed to provide our graduates with a competitive edge."

Prof. James Otto

Founder and former director of the Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Policy program
