Annual Events

Myres S. McDougal Distinguished Lecture in International Law

Established in 1976, the Myres S. McDougal Distinguished Lecture in International Law features eminent jurists and scholars addressing various aspects of international law and policy. Myres S. McDougal was one of the most influential scholars in the history of international law, and Professor Ved Nanda’s mentor at Yale Law School.

The lecture that bears the McDougal name attracts academics, statesmen and others who are lauded as the best in their respective fields of expertise. Presentation of the McDougal Lecture, as well as other addresses by visiting scholars and guests, is accompanied by opportunities for the students to meet and converse with the speakers.

Leonard v.B. Sutton Colloquium

The Leonard v.B. Sutton Colloquium was named for a former Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court who was a close friend and longtime supporter of the International Legal Studies Program.

Held annually since 1967, the Colloquium unites students, faculty and members of Denver’s legal community. Well-known authorities and foreign dignitaries present lectures and panel discussions on current international issues. The resulting papers are then collected into a special issue of the Denver Journal of International Law and Policy. As is the case with most of the Nanda Center’s programming, Student members of the International Law Society and Denver Journal of International Law and Policy collaborate with staff of The Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law to coordinate all aspects of the program—from speaker invitations to publication of the papers.

Cox Price Human Rights Award and Lecture

Established in 2006 in conjunction with the inauguration of the Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law, the Cox Price International Human Rights Award honors the outstanding achievements of individuals in the area of human rights.

Henry and Mary Bryan Lecture

The newest named lecture in international law, the annual Henry and Mary Bryan Lecture features accomplished practitioners who present on topics that transcend traditional notions of public and private international law.

In addition to the annual Sutton Colloquium and named lectures, the Ved Nanda Center hosts a number of other annual events and programming including a lunchtime lecture series for students and community members which features International Legal Studies Program alumni, visiting dignitaries, judges, scholars and practitioners discussing issues relevant to international & comparative law and foreign policy.
