Denver Law Partners with the Denver Urban Debate League
Sturm College of Law Professor Roberto Corrada and SCOL alumnus and Aurora Public Schools President Rico Munn founded the Denver Urban Debate League (DUDL) in 2009. Since then the law school has partnered with DUDL, combining forces to advance pipeline efforts. For the 2014-15 season, teams representing eleven area high schools from Denver Public Schools will be joined by teams from four Aurora Public Schools. Both districts have a large percentage of diverse students, and more than 150 debaters will compete this year in six tournaments and take part in other activities.
Denver Law’s building is home to two one city-wide DUDL tournament each year. Students, staff and faculty serve as competition judges. We invite others from the community to become judges for these tournaments—please email Diversity@law.du.edu if you are interested. The law school also hosts and sponsors a week-long Debate Camp in August that kicks off the debate season. Office space is provided for DUDL in the law school building, and DUDL has access to supplies and administrative assistance at Denver Law.
The Denver Law/DUDL partnership creates the opportunity for hundreds of students from metro area high schools to develop their analytic and presentation skills while sparring with their peers over issues and questions that profoundly affect our world. DUDL students express high interest in attaining a college education. In the spring of 2014, DUDL students were accepted to the University of Denver and a number of other institutions—among them, Yale, MIT, Colorado State University, Metro State University, Regis University, Wyoming and Wisconsin. And, five-plus years into our partnership, one of our former debaters graduated from the University of Denver (he attended on a debate scholarship) and in the fall of 2014 entered Northwestern University Law School with a scholarship.
