Wayne J. McKenna practiced as a barrister and solicitor for more than 20 years in Canada before immigrating to the United States in 2002. Together with his wife and law partner, Terry-Dawn Hewitt, he established a litigation boutique in 1993 in Edmonton Alberta, where they focused their practice on fire and explosion cases. McKenna has extensive courtroom experience including appearances before all levels of trial and appellate courts in his former jurisdiction and in the Federal Court of Canada. He has worked on many different types of fire cases including insurance company arson defense, commercial and product liability defense, plaintiff’s fire injury claims, and fire department liability defense matters. Before shifting his focus to fire cases, he practiced general litigation including commercial and criminal litigation, and family law.

McKenna and Hewitt have co-instructed Comparative Law at the Sturm College of Law. McKenna has shared with his students a lifelong interest in history, political science, and the law. His travels through Europe, India, and the Middle East including Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, enable him to bring valuable practical insights to the academic study of comparative law.

McKenna has conducted seminars across the United States and in Canada, addressing legal and evidentiary issues in fire and explosion cases. He has served on committees of a number of international fire associations including the National Fire Protection Association’s Technical Committee responsible for NFPA 921 Guide for Fire & Explosion Investigations, and the International Association of Arson Investigators Attorneys Advisory Committee and Fire Investigation Standards Committee.

McKenna was admitted to the practice of law in Colorado in 2005, having passed the Colorado bar exam. He has a passion for helping graduates of the Sturm College of Law to pass the bar exam, having successfully risen to the challenge of passing the Colorado bar exam without taking either an American J.D. degree or any other American law degree.
