Professional Biography

For the past five years, Timothy M. Hurley has taught a number of writing classes at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, including Appellate Writing and Argument and Advanced Legal Writing courses. In addition, for the last three years, Mr. Hurley has served as theDirector of the Federal Appellate Clinic at the Sturm College of Law. This last year, he served as the Acting Director for the first year Lawyering Process program.

Mr. Hurley has also served as the coach to several national moot court competition teams, including the National Moot Court Competition held each fall and the ABA Moot Court Competition held each spring, as well as assisting the teams competing in the Wechsler Criminal Moot Court Competition in late spring. Prior to teaching in Denver, Mr. Hurley taught writing classes at the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, in Sacramento, California. In addition to teaching First Year and Second Year writing classes, Mr. Hurley helped establish and teach the Capital Appellate Advocacy Institute in the summer of 1998, which, among other things, provided a one-month training program for 20 newly hired Public Defenders who would be handling state habeas petitions in death penalty cases. Mr. Hurley also coached at various times the National Moot Court teams, the ABA Moot Court teams, the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court teams and the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot teams.

Mr. Hurley updates the following chapters of the Colorado Appellate Practice Manual on an annual basis:
