Positive and Negative comments about the professor:Positive and negative comments about the course materials:
Professor Thomson is always prepared for class and always enthusiastic about teaching, even a subject like LP. He always answers email very quickly regarding any questions and he does a great job posting all course materials on TWEN for reference. He is a very fair professor and is very dedicated to teaching at the highest level. I have learned a lot in the past year and he has been extremely valuable in helping us all understand the basics of legal writing. A few comments: would like more "writing exercises" in class such as a 30 min drafting exercise or a 15 practice argument.   Welford did not provide great examples at all -- not too relevant. The discussion in Welford is good, but the Appendices had examples that didn't really pertain to the types of assignments we were given. The Welford examples were not very good at all -- would like a different book.
Professor Thomson was GREAT! The one complaint I could make was that sometimes he was a bit too ambiguous in answering questions for us. Although, I am sure that was part of his plan to have us attempt to answer our own questions. We had a great year. He made us LP T-Shirts, what else can you say?  LP is a very useful course if you give it a fair shake, but it was an awful lot of work for two credits.
Throughout the year, I've been thankful that I was lucky enough to get Professor Thomson for LP. From comments I've heard about other LP professors, I know that we got the best one by far. His helpfulness & sincerity are appreciated. His advice was extremely helpful & I know that his ultimate goal was always our success. Thank you, Professor Thomson.  The Wellford text was useful in the beginnning of the class. I found it less helpful as the year progressed. It's simplicity was very helpful at the beginning but annoying toward the end of the year.
Professor Thomson is the most fantastic professor...So motivating...the best best best LP prof ever!!!

Prof Thomson is the best LP professor out there
Tremendous!! great energy and honesty. I will be in touch with him forever.
Prof. Thompson is very kind to his students, and it is obvious that he cares about them and their development through law school. Unfortunately I think that he is somewhat limited by the LP system and its requirements. Prof. Thompson is extremely willing to help his students outside the classroom, but hesitates to answer a question directly.   This course was a disappointment in that its goal was to introduce us to "real world" situations, yet it failed to meet this goal. We were supposed to argue our oral briefs in front of judges at the end of the year. Then we were informed that we would argue in front of lawyers from the community. When it was all said and done, we argued in front of one lawyer, our professor, and a second year TA. Also, the inconsistency between the different sections of LP was frustrating. Our section was required to attend all classes and do extra assignments online for bluebooking. These assignments took hours and were scheduled during the deadline for our briefs. All of the other sections never heard of the online classes and their bluebooking classes were optional. In short, I felt that the whole structure of LP was disjointed and unpredictable. Standards changed frequently and inconsistency was rampant. Prof. Thompson was a pretty good prof, but the class was pretty much pointless. It was too much hassle and work for a 2 credit course, and not worth my effort.
Excellent professor. Course material spread a bit thin towards the end.

His dedication and organization are really outstanding. He has great insight into how to approach each problem probably because of how hard he works.  The power point presentations were very helpful. So were the checklists for pt headings and team briefs, etc. Laptops were in all practicality a must.
Very motivational. Wonderful at outside help.  Much more work than creadits. Great experience. A very needed course. I would actually recommend making it more credits. THanks

Professor Thomson was always well prepared and willing to help us with anything. He was the only professor all year who seemed to be on our side  The book really helped for the first semester but was less helpful for the brief. The course is much more work than the 2 credits suggest.
I LOVED Professor Thomson. I can not say enough good things about him. He not only stimulated my interest in the course and its materials, but he made me excited to be a lawyer. He was passionate, honest, helpful, and definitely cares about his students. He was always willing to help us outside of class, even on Saturdays. He is so genuine, and I hope to keep in touch with him throughout my law career. I am so thrilled that he was my LP teacher, and if I ever have the opportunity to take another class with him, I definitely will. Thank you Professor Thomson! You are incredible!  The book was helpful and I liked how it laid out the parts of the memo and the appellate brief. I would recommend the book again, but the book is only as good as your teacher. Professor Thomson made the material make sense and usable.
Was my favorite professor my first year. Very well organized, very helpful, and very interested in our progression over the year. Take any class he teaches. The University better retain his expertise and make every effort to keep him here. Kudos.   The book was helpful and useful
Professor Thomson is the best LP professor there is. He is always prepared and is always willing to help his students. The thing about professor Thomson is that he is just not here to get a pay check he truly cares about the success of his students. I will always be grateful to professor Thomson for all that he has taught me about legal writing.
I thought Tompson was a great professor.   A handout of examples for Blue Booking exercises would be helpful.
Professor Thomson is great; I have heared many horror stories about the other LP Professors and I have none of those complaints about Thomson. He is caring and open to questions. My only negative comment is that class sometimes incorporates advice some of which is great and others are not as necessary. we all need different levels of assistance, but this was one point where i did not fully apreciate class time. Thank you Professor Thomson for a great semestor.   Eh i used it as a reference and did not often do assigned reading prior to class.
Professor Thomson is fantastic. He inspired me to work hard and I learned a great deal from him. All LP professors should be this great!  I thought the Wellford text was very good. The legal research text was not that great. I got more out of the Lexis and Westlaw training sessions than I did from the legal research text.
Divid is an asset to DU Law and to the lawyer process program. I strongly recommend he be offered the opportunity to teach in other areas, and would recomend he teach 1L!  AAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHH! LP!!!!!!!
