The Renewable Energy Reader

7 Energy Efficiency

While chapters 2 through 6 of the Reader catalogue supply-side sources of renewable fuels, a significant part of the total energy equation is reducing primary energy requirements through the “fifth fuel” addressed in this chapter—energy efficiency(EE). The chapter explores EE technologies and approaches as well as the implications of utilities moving into a less centralized and more distributed model of electricity generation, including that suite of technological innovations called Smart Grid.
