The Renewable Energy Reader

5 Biomass

It is important to understand the sources of biomass, so this chapter starts with a discussion of biomass feedstocks with special emphasis on the waste-to-fuel processes as these hold promise for simultaneously solving waste disposal and energy problems. This chapter also addresses emerging technologies that are producing second and third generation advanced biofuels and a few of the significant drawbacks with biomass as a major renewable energy resource for the future: efficiency and environmental concerns both in growing it and in burning it.
