This chapter first addresses key issues related to the development of renewable and alternative energy on lands directly under tribal control. Next, it explains some of the mechanisms native nations can use to impact renewable energy development on federal lands outside of reservations. Finally, as tribes have suffered from exploitation of their resources in the past and have received only “pennies on every dollar” that mining firms and electric utilities have made from the development of tribal resources, this chapter also addresses environmental and energy justice issues.
