Hoffman Cup Champions

The Daniel S. Hoffman Memorial Trial Advocacy Tournament is the “crown jewel” advocacy tournament for upperclassmen at our law school. The tournament is named after our beloved alumnus, former Dean of DU Law, and nationally-renowned attorney. The Champions endured six very competitive rounds of advocacy, and were ultimately crowned by our panel of esteemed alumni and area members of the bar (pictured above).

This fall we crowned the following:

Champions: Luke Corliss, Sarah Colburn, and Robert Zahradnik-Mitchell.

NATIONAL TRIAL TEAM PLACES IN TOP 5 AT D.C. TOURNEY

Our National Trial Team finished in 5th Place (technically tied for 4th place) in a field of 22 teams at Georgetown Law School’s National White Collar Crime Trial Advocacy Tournament. Under the coaching and instruction of Attorney-Coach Sean Olson the All-2L squad of Josh Abromovitz, Alex Duncan, Kelly Frickleton, and Justin Friedberg, competed on behalf of our school, and Josh Abromovitz won the prestigious Best Advocate Award for the tournament.

NATIONAL TRIAL TEAM MEMBER WINS BEST ADVOCATE AWARD

Buffalo Squad 2015

Our National Trial Team recently competed at the fall Buffalo-Niagara Trial Advocacy Tournament, under the coaching and instruction of Attorney-Coach Kevin Keyes, and Assistant Coach Kyle McFarlane. The squad of Christopher Brummitt, Allison Derschang, Casey Fleming and Steven Visioli advanced past the “breakout” and Christopher Brummit won the prestigious Best Advocate Award.

DU LAW’S VIS TEAM WINS SHANGHAI MOOT COMPETITION

Spring 2015. The University of Denver Vis International Commercial Arbitration Team won the 5th Annual Moot Shanghai Competition in Shanghai, China. The Moot is a ramp-up tournament to competition in Hong Kong and Vienna. Thirty-two teams from twelve countries competed in four preliminary rounds followed by Quarter, Semi, and the Championship Round. Vis East team members Katie McAuley and Samantha Peaslee competed against the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) in the final round, winning the entire moot. Samantha Peaslee also received a Best Oralist Honorable Mention.

Jessup team 2nd place

JESSUP TEAM HEADED TO WORLDS FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR!

Spring 2015. Our Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Team competed at the Pacific Regional competition in Portland, Oregon. Defeating Hastings, the reigning five-year champion, our squad advanced to the Championship Round. For the 3rd consecutive year our team will be advancing to the international rounds (“Worlds”) in Washington D.C. Teammate Matt Thornton placed in the Top 7 Oralists. The team, pictured below, is comprised of J. Matt Thornton, Alex Jennings, Maral Shoaei, and Philip Nickerson. Coached by Megan Matthews, who is assisted by Molly McNab, and Coach Emeritus, John Powell.

Vis Moot Court Team

VIS MOOT COURT TEAM WINS SAN DIEGO TITLE

Spring 2015. The Denver Law Vis Team took 1st Place by winning the 9th Annual Michael Thorsnes International Arbitration Competition, hosted by the University of San Diego School of Law. The tournament was part of a series of moot court tournaments leading up to the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Thirty teams competed, representing schools from around the country.

Denver Law was represented by Lorne Hiller, Mamie Ling, Cheyenne Moore and Giedre Stasiunaite. Mamie Ling and Giedre Stasiunaite arbitrated in the Championship Round. Giedre Stasuinaite was runner-up for Best Oralist.

Fall 2014. San Juan, Puerto Rico. Our National Trial Team competed in the Puerto Rico Trial Advocacy Competition. Our squad, which* won the Hoffman Cup Championship* just 3 days prior, traveled to Puerto Rico and went undefeated, sweeping Georgetown Law School in their last round. Incredibly, this squad won 8 straight rounds in 2 tournaments in 8 days…and never lost a ballot (winning 27 of 27 possible ballots).

Tournament of Champions Semi-Finalist

Fall 2014. Waco, TX. Our National Trial Team competed in the Tournament of Champions, arguably the most competitive of all national tournaments in the country. Only the Top 16 Advocacy Departments in the country are invited. Our squad advanced all the way to the Semi-Finals…a feat never accomplished in the history of our school. Our students deftly displayed their* case analysis skills, evidentiary knowledge, professionalism and prowess “in the well.”*

TRIAL SQUAD HEADED FOR NATIONALS

Spring 2014. OKLA. The Advocacy Department (TAD) is proud to announce that our National Trial Team recently brought home the regional championship crown in the National Trial Competition. After 5 hard-fought rounds our squad defeated crosstown rival CU in the Finals. Our squad will be the 5th team in 5 years that we are sending to The National Trial Championships in Texas. With professionalism as their priority, our gang deftly applied their case analysis skills, “flash advocacy” skills, and evidentiary prowess.
