Board Member Bios
Michelle Doherty, Co-President
Mi pasión y dedicación en el campo de justicia y el servicio social se afirmó después de haber trabajado como voluntaria del Cuerpo de Paz en una comunidad indígena en el área rural de Guatemala. Hace más de dos años me gradué de la escuela de Estudios Internacionales de Josef Korbel con una maestría en Dererchos Humanos Internacionales. Desde que entré a la escuela de derecho he usado mi español en diferentes prácticas con trabajadores del campo, inmigrantes que están en proceso de deportación, y en el contexto de derecho laboral. El próximo semestre trabajaré con la Unidad del Caribe del Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados.
My passion and dedication to social justice and public interest were solidified after working as a Peace Corps volunteer in an indigenous community in the rural area of Guatemala. Over two years ago I graduated from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies with a Master’s in International Human Rights. Since entering law school I have used my Spanish in different internships with farm workers, immigrants in deportation proceedings, and in the context of labor law. Next semester I will be working with the Caribbean Unit of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Alexander McShiras, Co-President
Me llamo Alex McShiras. Asisti Boston College para la Universidad y Marquette para mi Master’s. Despues de la escuela, era un Asistente Legal para diferentes abogados que practica la ley de inmigracion por casi tres anos. En mi tiempo libre, me gusta mucho viajar, esquiar, correr, subir montanas, cocinar, y hablar el espanol.
My name is Alex McShiras. I went to Boston College for my undergraduate degree and to Marquette for my Master’s degree. After graduate school, I was a Legal Assistant for several different immigration attorneys for almost three years. I love travelling, skiing, running, climbing mountains, cooking, and speaking Spanish.
Andrew Brooks, Co-President
Mi nombre es Drew. Estudié espanol por cuatro anos en el colegio y dos en la universidad, pero lo actualmente aprendí cuando vivía en Oaxaca, Mexico, por seis meses. Me encantan la cultura y la comida mexicana y latinoamericana, y espero usar mi español en mi práctica.
My name is Drew. I studied Spanish for years in high school and college, but I really learned it while I lived in Oaxaca, Mexico, for six months. I love Mexican and Latin American culture and food, and I hope to use my Spanish in my practice.
Allison Sperling, VP of Service
Me llamo Allison Sperling y soy un 2L. Empezé a estudiar el español cuando tenía doce años y continué con mis estudios hasta que me gradué de la universidad. Soy la VP del Servicio. Decidí a asistir la facultad de derecho para que pueda ganar las habilidades necesarias para crear un sistema más inclusivo de la educación en los Estados Unidos. He trabajado con RMIAN, una organización que ayuda a la gente que ha sido detenido por la inmigración y también con la Oficina de Derechos Civiles (del Departamento de Educación de los EEUU). Espero que en el futuro puedo continuar ayudando a las personas que no tienen una voz o no pueden abogar por sus mismos.
My name is Allison Sperling and I am a 2L. I began to study Spanish when I was 12 years old and I continued with my studies until I graduated from college. I am the VP of Service. I decided to attend law school so that I could gain the necessary skills to create a more inclusive education system in the United States. I have worked with RMIAN, an organization that helps people who have been detained by immigration (ICE) and also with the Office of Civil Rights (of the US Department of Education). I hope that in the future I can continue helping people that don’t have a voice or can’t advocate for themselves.
Rachael Richards, VP of ESL
Hola! Me llamo Rachael Richards y soy de Idaho. Estoy en mi segundo año de Derecho en Denver. Soy tesorero y secretario de SSLA. Para todo de mi tiempo en Denver he participado en la programa de ESL y siempre es un punto culminante de mis semanas. ¡Empecé a estudiar español en escuela secundaria y no quiero parar! Nunca he estado en un país que habla español, pero mi sueño es vivir en España. Estoy interesado en la ley internacional, la ley inmigrante, la ley de negocios y solución alternativa de controversias.
Hi! My name is Rachael Richards and I am from Idaho. I am in my second year at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. I am the treasurer and the secretary of the Spanish Speaking Lawyer’s Association. For the entire time that I have been at Denver Law I have participated in the ESL program and it is always a highlight of my week. I started studying Spanish in high school and I never want to stop. I have never been to a Spanish speaking country but it is my dream to live in Spain. I am interested in international law, immigration law, business law, and alternative dispute resolution.
Tracy Ostlie, 1L Representative
Tracy es un 1L en DU, y es de Montevideo, MN. Estudió español y matemáticas en Luther College, que está en Decorah, IA. Pasaba un semestre en España, y ahora está interesada en usando su español para ayudar a clientes que hablen español. Participa en SSLA, ESL, y NLG, con un foco en temas de inmigración y derechos humanos.
Tracy is a 1L at DU Law, from Montevideo, MN. She studied Spanish and math at Luther College in Decorah, IA. She spent a semester in Spain, and now is interested in using her Spanish to help Spanish speaking clients as a bilingual lawyer. She participates in SSLA, ESL, and NLG, focusing on immigration issues and civil rights.
Liz Pophal, 1L Representative
Me llamo Liz Pophal y soy de Wisconsin. Asistí a la Universidad de Wisconsin – Madison, donde mis especializaciones fueron Español y Estudios Internacionales (opción medio ambiental). Pasé seis meses en Madrid durante mi tercer año en la universidad y estudié en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, una institución pública. Este año, soy una 1LE estudiante de derecho. Me interesa mucho la ley internacional, especialmente de tipo medio ambiental y planificación de propiedad. Espero que en el futuro pueda vivir y trabajar en un país hispanohablante.
My name is Liz Pophal and I am from Wisconsin. I attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where my majors were Spanish and International Studies (Environmental Option). I spent 6 months in Madrid during my junior year and studied at the Complutense University of Madrid, a public institution. This year, I am a 1LE law student. I’m really interested in international law, especially environmental and estate planning. I hope that in the future I can live and work in a Spanish-speaking country.
Lauren Blevins, 1L Representative
Soy Lauren Blevins y soy de Oklahoma. Estudié mi español en la Universidad de Arkansas. Trabajé con inmigrantes por dos años en un programa de educación en Arkansas y quiero trabajar con inmigrantes en el futuro también. Estoy interesada en la ley inmigrante y educación.

Jenna Thompson, 1L Representative
Hola, me llamo Jenna Thompson! Soy un 1L de Indiana, y estudié Español en Baylor University. También aprendí más Castellano viviendo con una familia en Mendoza, Argentina, por seis semanas. Participé en un Modelo de los Estados Americanos en El Salvador. Aprendé mucho de los políticos y relaciones de América Latina y conocí a muchos estudiantes de otras partes del mundo. Tengo interés in temas de humanos derechos en las Américas, y quiero hacer algo de eso cuando me graduare.
Hello, my name is Jenna Thompson! I’m 1L from Indiana, and I studied Spanish at Baylor University. I also learned more Spanish when I lived with a family in Mendoza, Argentina for six weeks. I participated in a Model Organization of the American States en El Salvador, where I learned a lot about international relations and different issues in Latin America, and met students from across the globe. I’m most interested in Human Rights in the Americas, and I want to do something related to this when I graduate.
Charles Mendez, 1L Representative
Soy Carlos y un estudiante de derecho de primer año. Me pasé seis meses el año pasado en DF, México trabajando para un banco de microfinanzas que se llama Fundación Realidad. Viajé los estados de Veracruz, Oaxaca, Morelos y el Estado de México y me enamoraron la gente, la cultura, y la comida. Mis intereses en la ley incluyen la inmigración, las relaciones de Latinoamérica, derecho y religión, y el derecho penal, por mencionar algunos. Estoy muy emocionado de incorporar mi español y el cariño para la comunidad de habla español que tengo en mi práctica como un abogado.
I’m Charles and a first year law student. I spent 6 months this past year in Mexico City, Mexico working for a microfinance bank called Fundación Realidad. I traveled around the states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, Morelos, and the Estado de Mexico meeting borrowers and fell all too quickly in love with the people, culture, and food. My interests in the law include immigration, Latin American relations, law and religion, and criminal law, to name a few. I’m excited to incorporate my Spanish and love for the Spanish-speaking community into my practice as an attorney.
