Career Development Center
The mission of the Career Development Center is to provide assistance to students as they conduct their job search during law school (via clerkships/internships) and following graduation as they seek permanent positions. The office also assists alumni of the College of Law as they make job changes or transitions from law into non-traditional fields. A broad spectrum of services and resources are provided, including but not limited to:
Career Consultation
Our office provides one-on-one career consulting sessions during which we assist students in identifying career goals and mapping out job search strategies (first year students eligible after November 1). Our staff is also available to critique resumes and cover letters, as well as advise students and alumni regarding effective interviewing and networking techniques.
On-Campus Interviews (OCI)
In the fall of each year, legal employers visit our campus to interview students for summer clerkships and first year associate positions. Prior to the OCI season, career consultants are available to assist students who choose to submit their materials for consideration.
Jobs Database
Students and alumni can access a proprietary web-based system called DU Law Careers Online to identify and research specific job openings.
Resource Center
The Career Development Center maintains a Resource Center with many career development materials. Students are welcome to review these materials during our regular office hours. We also maintain a database of job openings, DU Law Careers Online, which can be accessed on-line.
Career Programs
The Career Development Center presents many helpful programs and workshops throughout the year addressing various aspects of career development. Representative programs include:
- Mock Interviews
In addition to the mock interviews our staff conducts with students on an as-needed basis, our office presents a Mock Interview Day in the fall and again in the spring. This provides students with an opportunity to practice their interviewing skills with attorneys from the legal community.
- Government Employment
A variety of programs provide students with an opportunity to hear from a variety of government attorneys about practicing law in the public sector. In the past, presenters have included representatives from the US Department of Justice, Colorado Attorney General’s Office, various local district attorneys’ offices, the Denver City Attorney, U.S. Attorney, SEC and others.
- Resume/Cover Letter Writing Workshops
Students learn to prepare effective legal resumes and cover letters from Career Consultants in the Career Development Center.
- Interviewing/Networking Workshops
Students are instructed on how to develop successful interviewing and networking skills.
- Public Interest Career Fair
Through the Rocky Mountain Public Interest Career Fair (RMPICF) and the Career Information Fair on campus, students are provided with opportunities to explore careers in public interest law. The RMPICF, held at one of eight regional law schools each year, hosts several government and public interest employers.
- Judicial Clerkship Workshops
These workshops provide extensive information about the value of judicial clerkships and the mechanics of applying for these positions.
- Corporate Internship Program
The DU Corporate Internship Program, offered exclusively in the spring semester, allows 12-15 law students the opportunity to work as interns in the law departments of several companies in the greater Denver metropolitan area. An integral part of this program is completion of three written assignments. Discussed at mandatory seminars led by adjunct professors and participating corporate attorneys, they highlight the unique issues facing in-house counsel.
- Law Practice Specialty Series
Several times during the semester, attorneys practicing in various law specialty areas speak to students about their work. A different practice area is featured at each session. Past topics have included employment law, real estate, intellectual property, family law, environmental law, sports and entertainment law, and many more.
- Career Information Fair
An annual event (traditionally held at the beginning of the Spring semester) in which employers staff booths to provide information on their organizations. This is a great opportunity to network and learn about traditional and alternative career options.
- Partners at Law (PALS)
Hosting on-campus dinners and brunches where students meet informally with practicing attorneys.
Alumni Career Network
The Alumni Career Network provides a unique opportunity for students to make valuable connections with alumni to learn about specific areas of practice and/or other career fields. The ACN is an excellent resource for students who are interested in establishing or enhancing a professional network.
Public Service Practicum Requirement
Every JD Student entering DU College of Law will be required to perform a minimum of 50 hours of supervised, uncompensated, law-related public service work at some point during his or her law school career as a prerequisite to graduation. The goal of the public service practicum is to educate students as to their ethical responsibility as attorneys to provide pro bono legal assistance; to foster in students a lifelong commitment to public service by providing appropriate opportunity and training; and to develop students’ practical lawyering skills through providing work experience under the supervision of an attorney. The administration of the practicum requirement will be housed in the Career Services Office.
