SELJ Executive Board Members Win National Competitions

In January 2010, members of SELJ’s Executive Board have competed in and won national moot court and legal writing competitions. These two competitions are among the very few opportunities of this kind, in these fields, and members of the Sports and Entertainment Law Journal are the national champions. The accomplishments are detailed below.
SELJ’s Senior Article’s Editor, Matthew Hofmeister, won the 12th Annual Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition. His paper, titled, “The RIAA and Online Piracy: Why Bundling Access to Digital Music with Other Products and Services Would Give the Industry Greater Control Over Downloading” topped those of many other competitors, including students from Harvard Law School. In addition to the honor of winning this competition, his paper will be published and he was the guest of honor at the Grammy luncheon in LA.
Scott Neckers, SELJ’s Editor-in-Chief, and Thomas Loegering, SELJ’s former Managing Editor, competed in and won the third annual Tulane University Baseball Arbitration Competition, at Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, LA on January 23-24. The competition involved 4 written briefs based on the criteria for salary arbitration laid out in the Major League Baseball Collecting Bargaining Agreement, and 4 rounds of oral argument in front of lawyers familiar with baseball salary arbitration, including a leading authority on sports and labor law who is an actual MLB arbitrator. En route to the winning the championship, Neckers and Loegering beat teams from Duke, South Texas, Ave Maria, and Notre Dame. The team competed in the first two rounds on Saturday, representing the interests of one baseball club and one player at simulated salary arbitration hearings. After receiving the highest total score during the first two rounds among the 38 teams in the competition, Neckers and Loegering moved onto the semi-finals on Sunday morning, where they again bested their competition and moved onto the final round against Notre Dame. Even without much time to prepare in between the semi-finals and finals, the team won the final round in convincing fashion and took home the title.
