Two Denver Law environmental experts to speak at conference in Norway

Two Denver Law environmental and natural resources law professors will be featured in the Rule of Law for Nature program, which is being organized by the Natural Resources Law Group at the Faculty of Law, University of Oslo from May 9-11, 2012. Professor Jan G. Laitos, John A. Carver Jr. Professor of Law, and Dr. Anita Halvorssen, Adjunct Professor of Law, will take part in the conference that marks the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the Stockholm Declaration, the 30th anniversary of the UN World Charter for Nature and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the 25th anniversary of the Brundtland Report, and the 20th anniversary of both the Rio Declaration, Agenda 21, and the UNCED Conventions: the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Denver Law Hosts Rocky Mountain Regional Rounds of Jessup International Law Moot

Beginning February 9, 2012, and for the second year in a row, the University of Denver Sturm College of Law hosted the Rocky Mountain Super Regional Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot. 24 teams from the western and mid-western regions of the country arrived in Denver on February 9th to begin competing for a prized spot in the International Rounds which will take place this March, and which will bring in teams from around the globe.
The Jessup Competition is an advocacy contest in which teams of students write briefs and present oral arguments before a simulated International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. The competition starts in September with the release of a fact pattern describing a fictional legal dispute between two countries, and culminates with the world championship White and Case International Rounds, where teams from all corners of the globe come together for a week of competition and cultural events.
Written by a committee of leading scholars, the Jessup Problem is designed to address important and timely issues in international law. The Jessup Competition is the world’s largest moot court competition, with participants from more than 500 law schools in over 80 countries. The U.S. Regionals are branded as the most competitive qualifying competitions of any moot court contest. Each region has 22-24 schools competing, but only two will advance to the world championship.
Hosting the regional rounds of the competition is a natural fit for Denver Law which has been sending teams to compete in this prestigious event since 1965. On numerous occasions the Denver Law team has won regional competitions and placed high in the world. In 2008, the team placed second in the world for the Memorials (written briefs).
Participants say the Jessup International Law Moot is an experience they will never forget and that membership on the team prepares them for almost anything they might face in their future practice of international law.

Nanda Center report outlines human rights abuses against Bahraini civil society leaders

A report released today by The Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law found that the government of Bahrain is continuing to prosecute civil society leaders in violation of international law and in violation of the recommendations of a government-appointed human rights commission. The report was released on the eve of the trial of Bahraini human rights attorney, Mohammed al-Tajer, who is one of the subjects of the report. See full press release and report here.

Sturm Professor K.K. DuVivier Appointed to Energy Law Advisory Board

Professor K.K. DuVivier was appointed representative of the University of Denver Sturn College of Law’s Institute of Energy Law (IEL) Advisory Board. The Institute of Energy Law is a division of The Center for American and International Law in Plano Texas. Formerly named the International Oil and Gas Education Center, IEL has expanded its focus to include alternative energy as well.
