DU Law students win national arbitration moot court competition

Scott Neckers, 2L, and Thomas Loegering, 3L, competed in and won the third annual Tulane University Baseball Arbitration Competition, at Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, LA on January 23-24. The competition involved 4 written briefs based on the criteria for salary arbitration laid out in the Major League Baseball Collecting Bargaining Agreement, and 4 rounds of oral argument in front of lawyers familiar with baseball salary arbitration, including a leading authority on sports and labor law who is an actual MLB arbitrator. En route to the winning the championship, Neckers and Loegering beat teams from Duke, South Texas, Ave Maria, and Notre Dame.
The team competed in the first two rounds on Saturday, representing the interests of one baseball club and one player at simulated salary arbitration hearings. After receiving the highest total score during the first two rounds among the 38 teams in the competition, Neckers and Loegering moved onto the semi-finals on Sunday morning, where they again bested their competition and moved onto the final round against Notre Dame. Even without much time to prepare in between the semi-finals and finals, the team won the final round in convincing fashion and took home the title.
They have brought home an impressive trophy which will go into a new trophy/award case in the law school.
