What Can Be Checked Out
Books in the Treatise, Tax, Colorado, and PASCAL collections can be checked out for 28 days. Generally, those books that cannot be checked out will have “Non-Circulating” stamped on the inside of the front cover. Multi-volume sets (more than 2 volumes) do not circulate.
Current and bound journals can be read in the Library but cannot be checked out.
Items placed on reserve for courses are arranged in alphabetical order by faculty member’s last name. Please keep this in mind when requesting materials at the Circulation Desk as it will help staff in locating items. Faculty Reserve items are available for two hours, unless otherwise noted.
A wide variety of videotapes, DVD’s, and CD-ROMS are available for checkout. This material circulates for 24 hours. Inquire at the Circulation Desk for information on using these materials. Audiovisual materials on course reserve only circulate for two hours, unless otherwise directed by the faculty member.
The fine for library materials returned late is fifty cents per day, to a maximum of $15.00 per item. The fine on overdue reserve materials is $2.50 per hour, up to a maximum of $50.00. After six weeks, an item is considered lost, and the patron will be billed for the replacement cost of that item plus a $25.00 processing fee. Non-payment of library charges can result in registration blocks, transcripts being withheld, and suspended borrowing privileges.
To view the details of any fines on your record, log in to the Library Catalog. For questions regarding fines, contact the Circulation Desk at 303-871-6188.
Items can be renewed from the Library Catalog. First renewals can be done by calling the Circulation Desk at 303-871-6188. Or stop by the Circulation Desk to renew an item.
If an item is checked out and unavailable for your use, borrowers may choose to place a hold on that item. When it is returned, you will be notified that the item is being held for you at the Circulation Desk for seven days. To place a hold when viewing the item in the Library Catalog, click on the Request button at the top of the screen. You may also stop by or call the Circulation Desk at 303-871-6188. Items at the Hampden Center can be placed on hold, even if they are not checked out. To view the details of your hold requests, log in to the Library Catalog.
Borrowing from Other Libraries
Information about borrowing from other libraries is available on the Interlibrary Loan guide.
Hampden Center is an off-site storage facility where the Law Library houses lesser used items. Hampden is also currently the home of all of Penrose’s Collection. To request a book from Hampden, find the book in the Library Catalog and click on the Request it button. The book will be delivered to the library in 2-3 days and you will be contacted. The book can then be picked up at the Circulation Desk.
You may also visit the Hampden Center facility during their business hours (Mon-Thurs: 8:00a.m. – 8:00p.m., Fri: 8:00a.m. – 5:00p.m.) to view the book. It is located at 10311 W Hampden Ave Frontage Road South, Suite 107, Denver, CO 80235. We recommend that you call 303-871-6700, to make an appointment for an in-person visit to this facility. Appointments are preferred in order to minimize your wait time for material retrievals.
Alumni of the University of Denver Law School are entitled to free library access and borrowing privileges for life. Show your DU student ID or drivers license at the Circulation Desk, fill out an application form, and your library card will be mailed to you. You can begin checking out items immediately.
