The Spanish Speaking Lawyers Association (SSLA) is the student branch of the Lawyering in Spanish (LIS) program at DU. The SSLA works to facilitate the use of the Spanish language in the practice of law for DU law students and for the Denver legal community, while promoting global cultural understanding and a practical awareness of current legal issues in the Spanish-speaking community, both domestically and internationally.
The SSLA promotes various professional and community opportunities for its members. The successful Mentorship Program matches law students, according to their interest, with bilingual attorneys in the Denver area who practice in related areas of law. Also, in addition to attending international legal conferences outside of Denver, SSLA members participate in weekly or monthly bar association events in Denver and connect with bilingual attorneys in the Denver legal community who represent a variety of practice areas. The SSLA also serves the local Denver community through meaningful volunteer service activities, including organizing a holiday assistance program for the homeless, performing translation projects for the Rocky Mountain Survivor Center, and working with Colorado Legal Services to provide free legal assistance to Spanish-speaking individuals. The SSLA also manages an extensive ESL program on campus, providing free English classes to the DU custodial staff and their families.
The SSLA works closely with LIS to provide its members with legal internship opportunities in major law firms abroad, attendance at international legal conferences, an active presence in the global legal community, and the opportunity to establish a network of Spanish-speaking lawyers around the world. The SSLA is an ever-expanding student organization whose members are actively committed to pursuing legal careers utilizing their Spanish language skills and unique practical experiences.
