Diego Martinez to present his lecture "Human Rights in Colombia" at the Korbel School
Monday, November 5, 2012 at 5:00pm - 6:30pm
Location: Cherrington Hall Room 301
Diego Martinez is the director of the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights and the head of the Commission on Human Rights for the Marcha Patriotica in Colombia. Mr. Martinez investigates human rights abuses throughout Colombia and his organization documents, denounces and litigates human rights issues. He is currently involved in a highly contentious land restitution case in the Department of Sucre involving human rights abuses and political prisoners. Because of this case, Mr. Martinez and other human rights defenders received death threats. He is currently in the United States to present the case to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Washington, D.C. This case comes at a time when human rights activists in Colombia are being targeted for work they are doing on behalf of the land rights of small farmers.
