Experiential Advantage and Modern Learning

The University of Denver provides students the opportunity to participate in the Experiential Advantage Curriculum (EA). It allows students to spend a full year of their law school career in real or simulated legal practice. The EA Curriculum combines live client clinics, high-quality externships (including our new Semester in Practice Externship), and legal simulation courses. DU views adjuncts as integral to providing a full range of EA courses. In fact, it is our hope that ultimately every adjunct will make their class an EA course. This will provide greater options for our students and allows adjuncts to highlight their greatest strength – their real-world knowledge of their fields. Visit the EA website.

Some adjuncts may also want to convert their course to what DU refers to as a CIC course. CIC stands for Carnegie Integrated Course. These courses are highly experiential, with a focus on simulating real legal situations, developing advanced research and writing skills, fostering professionalism, and enhancing oral advocacy skills. The Modern Learning Committee is in charge of promoting and helping professors develop CIC courses. Adjuncts who are interested in creating CIC courses can learn more by visiting the CIC website and by contacting Roberto Corrada, the Mulligan Burleson Chair in Modern Learning at rcorrada@law.du.edu.

Finally, professors can view examples of Course Portfolios for innovative experiential courses by visiting the Educating Tomorrow’s Lawyers website. This site contains professors’ syllabi, activities, sample exams, videos of the professors discussing their experiential courses, and many more resources.
