Probate Practicum | L4709

Students will learn the dynamics of protective proceedings (e.g. guardianships and conservatorships) in Colorado through experiential learning. The class will participate in an extensive mock trial simulation that is designed to allow students to work though a contested protective proceeding. Students will be responsible for interviewing the client, sorting through and identifying all necessary information and documents, preparing all applicable pleadings, attending and participating in the hearing on the petition for appointment as counsel for the client before a probate judge or magistrate, and preparing follow up correspondence for the client and pleadings that will conclude the attorney-client relationship. Third-year students will have the option of representing a pro bono client to the extent that matters are available.
