Lawyering in the Criminal Defense Sector | L4709CD
This course is designed for students who are taking their first externship, either at the Public Defender's Office or with a private firm. If space allows, students who have taken an externship in the past and will be enrolled in a criminal defense externship in the Fall will also be considered. The course will take a close look at the challenges facing criminal defense practitioners, including handling difficult clients, negotiating with prosecutors, creating a 'client-centered' practice, and managing a heavy caseload. This class is not a trial skills class, but instead requires students to reflect upon a wide variety of topics related to the ethical and sustainable practice of criminal defense law. Students who do not yet have an externship placement, but plan on securing an externship in a criminal defense setting, are encouraged to enroll in this course.
