Catherine Smith is Associate Dean for Institutional Diversity and Inclusiveness and Professor of Law at Denver Law. After graduating from the University of South Carolina School of Law, she clerked for the late Chief Judge Henry A. Politz of the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and for U.S. Magistrate Judge William M. Catoe Jr. She then served as a legal fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center. Before joining the faculty at the University of Denver, Dean Smith was an Assistant Professor at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law from 2000 to 2004.
Dean Smith teaches Torts, Advanced Torts, and Employment Discrimination. Her research interests include torts, civil rights law, and critical race theory. Her articles have been published in Washington University Law Review, Wisconsin Law Review, North Carolina Law Review, and Rutgers Law Review, and Connecticut Law Review.
Professor Smith’s current research explores the equal protection rights of children of same-sex parents. In 2010, her article, Equal Protection for Children of Gay and Lesbian Parents: Challenging the Three Pillars of Exclusion – Legitimacy, Dual-Gender Parenting, and Biology, was selected as one of the best articles in the field of sexual orientation law by the Williams Institute at the UCLA Law School, winning the Dukeminier Award.
On September 4, 2014, the Colorado Women’s Bar Association honored Catherine as one of six “Legal Educators Who Have Raised the Bar.” She was the recipient of the 2013 Hayward Burns/Shanara Gilbert Award, given by the Northeast People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference for demonstrating, through her work within the legal academy and in the community, “a sustained commitment to the advancement of the legal, social, and economic position of People of Color in our society.”
Randy Wagner is Administrative Director for Strategic Initiatives at Denver Law. He holds a PhD in political science from Yale University and a JD from the University of Arizona College of Law. Randy has taught political science at the University of Texas, Houston Community College, the University of Arizona and Portland Community College. He is an adjunct professor at Colorado Women’s College, a unit within the University of Denver that serves post-traditional students.
In 2014 Randy received DU’s 2014 Staff Advisory Council Crimson and Gold Award. The award recognizes “a staff member who displays outstanding commitment to and support of the University of Denver” by improving campus life for faculty, staff and students, as well as for exemplary work outside his or her job duties.
